According to the Met Office, 2025 is predicted to be one of 3 hottest years, with global average temperatures likely to rise by 1.29 to 1.53 degrees C above pre-industrial levels. The severity of climate change is increasing and threatening all economies in the world.
According to Swiss Re, global economic losses from natural disasters in recent years have amounted to about US$300 billion per year due to storms, floods, droughts, wildfires and other climate change. The World Bank also warned that, without effective action to mitigate the impact of climate change, losses due to natural disaster could account from 2% to 3% of global GDP each year by mid-century.
More specifically, Vietnam is in a group that is highly vulnerable to climate change, with economic losses from extreme storms in 2024, especially typhoon Yagi, estimated to be ten times greater than all the floods in 2023. These affect not only families and individuals, but also businesses and the whole society. The principles of sustainable development are becoming increasingly important in the context of climate change.
However, the Circularity Gap Report by Circle Economy and Deloitte points out a sad reality: the global economy reached only 7.2% circularity in 2023, down from 9.1% in 2018, as more than 90% of waste materials are not reused. In addition, the amount of resources extracted in the past six years is nearly equal to the total amount of resources extracted in the entire 20th century.
In the face of these enormous challenges, no country can tackle climate change alone. Global cooperation is needed to promote comprehensive solutions. Now is the time for policymakers, experts and businesses to band together to assess the real impacts, make choices and take timely action to build a safer and more sustainable future.
Therefore, Forbes Vietnam organizes the Sustainable Development event “Reinvent Today, Shape Tomorrow” to gather outstanding leaders in this field, discuss and seek solutions together to help businesses move forward, foster more creative thinking and build a foundation for sustainable growth.

In order to create an open space for discussion and explore directions in the trend of sustainable development within the business community, Forbes Vietnam is organizing the NEW ECONOMY development conference. The conference gathers experts and leaders from businesses leading the market to discuss current topics on low-carbon economies, climate change mitigation, and the path towards sustainable development.
After returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump immediately signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change. This is a regrettable backward step, raising concerns about the future of sustainable development, especially as climate change becomes more extreme and unpredictable. The keynote speech will share the impacts and challenges of the US withdrawal from this agreement, along with Vietnam’s priorities in that context.
According to the regulations on extended producer responsibility, enterprises manufacturing and importing electrical and electronic products are required to carry out recycling responsibilities starting from January 1st 2025; enterprises manufacturing and importing means of transport (cars, motorbikes) will carry out recycling responsibilities from January 1st 2027. EPR requires manufacturers and importers to be environmentally responsible throughout the product life cycle, from design, production to consumption and disposal.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) not only helps businesses join hands to protect the green planet but also enables them to open the door to new business opportunities. The discussion session focuses on the actions of manufacturers and importers in Vietnam, to promote action programs related to EPR. Experts and senior leaders will discuss and seek solutions to transform the way products and waste are managed, to protect the environment and promote a circular economy.
Innovative technologies play a key role in sustainable development, helping to transform the economy from a linear model (take, make, dispose) to a circular model, where resources are preserved and used more sustainably. For example, AI and IoT support the optimization of resource use in production, transportation and consumption. Or by promoting sustainable production, using renewable energy, and adopting sustainable transportation, businesses help reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainability in mobility. At the same time, renewable energy and smart manufacturing also open up sustainable development opportunities for businesses and communities. This discussion brings together business leaders to share sustainable practices and opportunities arising from practical actions.
